To be certified SIPP, all packaging must pass physical performance tests.
If your product:
- is in rigid packaging, and
- weighs <50lbs and is non-fragile
OR
- is in flexible packaging, and
- is non-fragile, non-granular, and non-sharp
then you can conduct a self-test to certify as described as demonstrated in the instructions and videos below!
If your product is in rigid packaging and weighs more than 50lbs or is fragile and weighs less than 50lbs, or your product is in flexible packaging and is fragile, granular, and/or sharp, you cannot self-test. You will need to submit a lab report from an ISTA-6 lab in Amazon’s APASS (Amazon Packaging Support and Supplier Network) network or the Amazon Packaging Lab.
Start numbering on the largest side of the box/mailer, and continue numbering (1-4) by rotating the package to the right. The remaining surfaces are numbers 5-6. Make sure to photograph the undamaged package first. Use this same package throughout the entire test.
Mark 18” and 36” on a table leg or wall. Drop the box/mailer from the height onto the face, edge, or corner in the order listed below.
Drop | Orientation | Height | |
1 | Edge | 3-4 | 18" |
2 | Edge | 3-6 | 18" |
3 | Edge | 4-6 | 18" |
4 | Corner | 3-4-6 | 18" |
5 | Corner | 2-3-5 | 18" |
6 | Edge | 2-3 | 18" |
7 | Edge | 1-2 | 18" |
8 | Face | 3 | 36" |
9 | Face | 3 | 18" |
10 | Edge | 3-4 | 18" |
11 | Edge | 3-6 | 18" |
12 | Edge | 1-5 | 18" |
13 | Corner | 3-4-6 | 18" |
14 | Corner | 1-2-6 | 18" |
15 | Corner | 1-4-5 | 18" |
16 | Face | Most fragile | 36" |
17 | Face | 3 | 18" |
Drop a fresh corrugate box sized 9” x 3” x 6” containing a 3lb bag of sand from a height of 3 feet directly on to the bag without causing material punctures, item damage or seal failure.
You must ensure the structure:
- Provides protection against sortation and distribution
- Is sealed with contents full enclosed
- DOES NOT have excess slack-fill
